In Acts 6 there was a great dispute because the Greek-speaking widows were being neglected. The apostles appointed servants who were filled with the Holy Spirit to do this important work so that the elders could devote themselves to the ministry of the word. Churches ordain deacons for this important work, just as Christ calls the church to engage in mercy, serving the least of these.
